Anime Weekend Atlanta 2020 Online Panel: That B.A.D. Panel (Bad Anime Dubbing)

That B.A.D. Panel (Bad Anime Dubbing)
Download Link Above!

Here is one of the panels I was grateful to do for AWA online back in December of 2020 where I focused on bad anime dubs. This takes maybe, possible, totally direct inspiration homage to the old Corn Pone Flicks BAD videos Matt Murray, Dave Merrill and a handful of other Atlanta based anime fans did to mock what was considered bad back in those times (almost 30 years geez!) I plan on putting more on this site like I said in my last post which will happen in due time, but this will just have to suffice for now. Enjoy!

Evidence #35 - Cowboy Bebop Anime Guide Books (2002)

Happy 20th Birthday Cowboy Bebop! It's been 20 years since Bebop first aired on TV Tokyo, and has made a huge impact on anime fandom ever since then. This post makes up for the way belated 7th anniversary post I never did in February, which my bad on that.

This time we got a real showcase of several books by Tokyopop, which were like little B-Clubs in a way in throughout 2002. I remember picking these things up from Borders bookstores (you know, when those used to exist) throughout the year. My brother had half of these collected and I had the other. Eventually going through my family storage in cleaning their garage over the past couple of years, my brother was cool enough to give me his books not too long ago, so i've kept them in a box till just now for them to be scanned for people to see. As of this post, the later volumes go for $50 on up on ebay for those who really want to own these in their collection. As far as i'm aware, these only got a first printing and were never on shelves after that.

These contain brief synopsis of each episode with screen caps to help someone narrate the reader into knowing what happens without really watching the show if they are unable too (which thanks to current technology, anybody can watch Bebop on their phones through streaming sites). They remind me of the early ANIMAG issues with episode synopsis of Zeta Gundam and Dirty Pair since the editors working on that didn't think those shows would ever be released in the west. These Bebop books are interesting since the show was airing on Adult Swim in its second run by 2002, and the show was being put out on DVD around this time if not already fully put out. So this was for true Bebop fans who wanted to see concept art, what type of songs played in the episodes, and neat small wallpapers in the books if someone wanted to cut out and hang the cast on their walls somewhere next to their big boobed anime girl wallscrolls. I'm not using the term "waifu" because no one used that term in the early 2000's, you got today's current fandom to thank for that term.

So hope you guys enjoy the .pdf's provided for everyone to check these out, and See You Space Cowboy!

Evidence #24: A-ni-me: The Berkeley Journal of Japanese Animation (Vol.1, Issue.1, 1990)

(Total Size: 158 mb)

Well, now that Animazement has come and gone, I do have a gem that I got from the convention, what was from over a year ago that I haven't gotten around to scanning until just now. I also mention this story and the book in my con report from last year, so give that episode a listen if you care too.

So here is my story on that: I remember walking around the dealers room floor before they closed that Sunday of Animazement 2014, and I came across a dealer who usually sells model kits and unique die-cast Japanese toys that are at the usual prices in Japan. This same dealer also happens to sell hobby magazines and the like, which these kinda cons is where I get one issue a year from Hobby Link Japan. I remember looking at the bottom of the magazine shelf and seeing this book, which is something I had never laid eyes upon and started flipping through it. It was then that I realized it had translated transcripts and synopsis from anime series like Ranma 1/2 and Nadia, to OVA's like Bubblegum Crisis, Dragon's Heaven, MegaZone 23, Gunbuster and Outlanders.

I went over to the dealer and asked him about this book, which he told me that this was something he had and sold long ago, but had it been sold back to him sometime after. When I got home from my usual long drive back from the con to my home South Carolina, I was able to look at the book further. What I found most interesting on the back was advertisements for AnimeCon '91, including a print out of guests that would be coming, and an application to attend. So I decided to do what I normally do in this situation when I get something this cool, and that's to put it on the shelf to not be seen or hardly remembered for a certain period of time.

It wasn't until I talked to Trish Ledoux over on her Twitch.tv channel one night months later that I mentioned this book to her, which I also found that her husband Toshifumi Yoshida was credited as a "special thanks" in the book. So to my curiosity, I wondered how much involvement he had with this book? I was able to get my answer at this years Animazement when I showed him and Trish this book, which they both seemed to be pleased with this relic of the past. Toshi was cool enough to sign it for me and Trish seemed interested in wanting this to archived on the blog.

So now that the tl;dr story is outta the way, I can let you guys see this for yourselves. I went ahead and scanned everything into a .pdf file so anyone who is interested can see this for themselves. I'm not sure when my next post will be after this one, which is really to say in the coming months. Hope you guys enjoy this anime relic, and see you next time!

Evidence #14: (You can still) Rock in Animerica (Animerica Vol. 3 No. 3)

(Drunkenly kicks open the front door)... "HAPPY BIERFDHEY LITTLE GUUUAAIIIYYYY!"

I am not sure that I will be the kinda man in the future to almost show up belated to my own kids birthday party in a drunken manner (but ill be honest, that sounds like something I would totally do), but I decided to take that out on my own website. It was on this day 2 years ago that I created this blog site to post up my publication crap for you guys to see.  I remember telling myself a couple of weeks ago "Oh hey you, you started this blog you made like just about 2 years ago. I need to do something special for it," which... I did have something down for it, and still sorta do.

I'm not gonna bother to look at what I did last year (finds myself checking the backlog to find an MC Chris video and some words of hope written), but this year I do have something to show. Its been well over a year since I posted an Animerica issue, and its high time I show you one that you guys may enjoy. This was another issue I had Trish Ledoux sign back at Animazement (back in 2009) where I remember us sharing a moment on how much we love the anime on the front cover of this issue. This time, I'm gonna show you the Fatal Fury issue of Animerica, with much needed KICK BACK!!!

Trish, your boss for signing this issue (and you were pretty happy when I showed it to you too), because like all of your issues as the editor, you always had something to say to your readers. And speaking of people who had something to say...

This issue has the interview with Masami Obari, over at his HOUSE OF STYLE!!! This also includes the move list for Terry/Andy Bogard, Joe Higashi and Geese Howard, while Mai Shiranui takes up a corner of a page for teenage/early adult 'fapping' material. Hey, don't be hatin, this is what lonely American otaku had back in the 90's. Those were some hard times, real hard. This also dates this by adding that Terry had a MAKE MY VIDEO contest. Is that a real thing, and does anyone out there have these entries you can post on this blog? I am dead freaking serious, I have to read these. Please, someone say yes to that. I find it funny how they state "young punk Tarantino." I mean, isn't he still one today? Well moving on...

Here we got some reviews regarding Orguss 02, the "Most Dangerous ZeitGeist" himself MD GEIST, Gundam talk (with an article of the upcoming 08th MS Team titled "Gundam Platoon Story"), Akira, Speed Racer and just a chock full of other things you can view. They did a review on Popful Mail, which gee, I wonder if they ever got past the FIRST FREAKING BOSS!! Last time I tried was at my friends work place, and I shut it down after like 20 minutes of trying. As cool as a game as that is, its stupid hard for me, yet my quest still continues to collect as much Working Designs merch as I possibly can. Now lets see some ads...

I should go on record that I own 2 copies of the Fatal Fury on VHS, which I am glad too. And you guys have to get down with that ANIME-NIA ad, you cant pass up them deals. And how can anyone turn down LASERDISC and VHS AT DISCOUNT PRICES!!!  I got's to get me them Robotech on Laserdisc, that's a steal (according to ebay prices, you might do a tad better.) Starblazers on VHS, that is my hookup!!

I should note, I left out the manga stuff from the issue, which was One Pound Gospel and At Nights Dream of Near... Escape because, its kinda too much for me to scan for right now. I think if you guys requested it, I could put it up. But that's all I got for right now. I shouldn't be too long before my next post, and I did better this time than last year, so you gotta give me credit on that. But ill close this out by saying, Come meet the Dawn ITS A BRAND NEW DAY!!!!

Cool Kids Club Podcast Episode 43 - Battle Royal High School Review

Hey gang! This week in our quest of AnimEigo titles we stumble upon the world of something we just can't comprehend too well in Battle Royal High School (aka, might be "Tekken: The Wonder Years"). This has man in cheetah mask (KING), space police, big teddy bears, boomerang sewer grates, fairies on crack, exploding trees and so much more. This episode is kinda split up into two parts, which part (a) is our review of the anime, we talk about movies like Drive and talk about video games. Part (b) is our pre show DRAMA!!!!, where we decide to resurrect C(hibi)G(oku) from the dead, but it turns out that was more trouble than we bargained for and the Dragonballs just exploded and CG went back to the negaverse or wherever. Long story short, I don't wanna explain anything to you, but CG does anyways. All this and more in this weeks episode!

Evidence #2: The Bubblegum Crisis Protoculture Addicts Issue 14 (Aug - Sept 1991)

"So im back! And I've been here for years, Rockin the-"... hold up, that's not the right song. Let me try that again.

Welcome again boys and girls, as it is the main man of the hour, with more crap to shove in your face. Sorry about the first part, I wanted to try and be funny (to whoever would get that song lyric). Is it funny? Surly not. Should I edit it? Perhaps. Am I gonna forget to edit it and leave it in? ... yes... my answer would have to be yes.

But I am back for post number 2 (the first one doesn't count, its just a measly introduction) as I have yet more little pieces of anime past to show. For this post I have myself another little magazine (or I guess fanzine if you would call it, you people are more than welcome to correct me) of a certain issue of Protoculture Addicts from August to September of the year 1991 with none other than... MORE BUBBLEGUM CRISIS!!!!

I came across this issue at my first Animazement (slash/ anime con) back in 2007 in the dealers room. At the time, still fresh into Bubblegum fandom, I was in the dealers room for probably a good hour (my second trip there that Saturday) and one of the dealers was selling comics (pretty sure its the same guy every year. Hey, dudes gotta make a living). The dealer had other issues of Protoculture Addicts in the bin (if memory serves me right) and I ran across this little baby in the wild. Of course when I saw this issue, I was rather shocked that I found another piece of BGC to add to my slowly growing collection ( I wanna say at this time I found the Animerica BGC issue before I came across this) and wondered how long this guy must have had this. So right then and there I used the cash I brought with me that day for the con and took it with me along with other merchandise I picked up as well.

This was a magazine that I would have to say was before anime magazines had colored pictures inside them than on the cover. And if I had to take a good guess, I'd probably say that Animerica was the first magazine to use color on the pictures inside than just on the cover. Of course if I'm wrong on this, leave a comment stating why, because it wouldn't be the first time I've been wrong on something and certainly not the last.

But this blog would not be complete without pictures, and I do have quite a "few" to share.

Yea, nice fan art. I guess for 1991, this was considered "good" by anime fans at the time. Sure it might look like Priss is has some "manly" features about her, with some proportions misplaced here and there, but for this time period you can't help but to let things like this slide, once in a while. Lets crack open this baby and see whats inside:

Wow! For 1991 this seemed to be a lot of information for the BGC fan at the time. Episode synopsis, fan art,  RPG info, Character faqs and bios and some talk on the two ova series (yes, including Crash). For what its worth (the picture is big enough for you guys to read the info too) you got some interesting reading material to go through. This just goes to show how passionate anime fans were to series like these and the subscribers they had. And granted, these guys were not some USA Today writers, they were just fans to make info available for other fans.

Of course, this wouldn't be complete without some good old advertising and more fan art.:

Gotta say not bad, probably in better quality than some of the fan art in magazines today (last time I checked, but I really think magazines take in some really good stuff now). Also if you notice on the last image, a little picture of Goku: Midnight Eye. How I love that OVA, and yet I have the complete manga sitting on my shelf... waiting to be read.

Well boys and girls, I think that about covers it for this post. I have more material coming up so its not like this is all. The material I have gotten is from another big BGC fan (or "fan-girl" to be exact) who has more of a collection than I do, which puts me in a somewhat envy state of mind. But I know hard work when I see it, which this girl has been a fan longer than I have. So I guess if I started the same time she did, I might be close behind her statistically speaking. But that aside, shes a cool gal from knowing her over the past year now and quite the nerd to boot. You will find out this mysterious person... next time. Take it easy.
