I missed putting out a big 10th anniversary back in February, and even more so dropped the ball on putting anything up on here past the Fred Patton tribute post back in November of 2018. The honest truth is this blog isn't that important to me right now and other interest have reared up that have taken my attention. </p><p>So what have I been doing since that last post? Well going to conventions, doing panels for conventions, getting back into making AMV's again for convention competitions and doing very well by winning a few awards here and there in 2020. Other things in life have taken my attention towards them and well see how they go. Still doing podcasting but that's been something to put out once every other month at this point. I still enjoy doing them and see no reason to stop.</p><p>The thing with this blog is the fact that the time it takes me to invest in scanning images and doing my best to make them readable for the viewer I could be doing other things with my time, which is exactly what I've been doing lol. Granted, I got a few things that I can post up on here that I need to get around too. With COVID destroying going to in-person conventions, online conventions seemed to fill that void temporarily, which ive been fortunate to submit some content for these cons as video panels. I will be posting up what I've done on here in due time, I think its a pretty good idea. </p><p>I've also got planned to post up some anime ost's on vinyl and cassette. I've been collecting them for a while now between conventions and online sales and I'd like to share that with you guys. It's an easy thing to post up that I think most of the stuff you can't seem to find online or not as of yet. Once I get a few more things ripped i'll put them all together on a zip file and you guys can have at it!</p><p>I guess if I wanted this blog to really die then you wouldn't be seeing this post. As much as I'd like to post up more anime magazine and gaming magazine scans, its time and will I don't have on that for right now. I have a couple of interesting stuff ive picked up since the last post that hopefully i'll get around to doing. If this is still getting traffic after a decade then I guess I'm doing good regardless of having this site still stay up here for as long as possible. </p><p>Anyways thanks for reading this post and hope to get you guys some content shortly. </p>Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808511318047899265.post-33527133851726939662018-11-26T16:54:00.000-05:002018-11-26T16:54:10.456-05:00Evidence #37 - A Fred Patten Tribute (various Newtype USA Issues)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

To a lot of people in fandom out there, November 12th, 2018 will be a day of remembrance for the biggest icon of nerd fandom, Stan Lee. But here at the Anime of Yesteryear, we will pay tribute to another great member of fandom who passed away the same day, notably in anime fandom.<a href="http://file770.com/fred-patten-1940-2018/"> Fred Patten</a> (or as i'd like to call Fred "Old Man" Patten) is one of the most influential figures of anime fandom, who has spent almost 50 years<a href="http://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/category/funny-animals-and-more/"> studying and writing about anime</a> and has published numerous articles about anime over the years. A figure in one of the earliest anime publishing companies in the states,<a href="http://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/streamline-pictures-part-1/#prettyphoto[17139]/7/"> Streamline Pictures</a>, where he had a part in getting known name anime in the states that has become almost mainstream to this day. Patten has written dozens of of material on anime, which his <i><a href="https://www.amazon.com/Watching-Anime-Reading-Manga-Reviews/dp/1880656922">Watching Anime, Reading Manga: 25 Years of Essays and Reviews</a></i> is an excellent source of information regarding how fandom for anime got started. Patten is also a very known figure in furry fandom throughout his years, which both anime and furry fandom's can both equally share the grief in his passing, despite not seeing eye to eye on anything else in each of their fandom's. So a heartfelt salute to you Fred, because Stan Lee can screw off for all I care!</div>
<br />
Here's the real reason for this post. I've known a number of people that would like to see Fred's articles from Newtype USA to be published online, and I decided to dig out all the issues I own that Fred has written for and put them in one big zip file. Each folder will have the cover of the issue, and the scanned articles that are included in that issue. I have about 19 issues in total that has something from Fred in them, and they range on historical landmarks in anime fandom, Japanese releases, and of course his opinion on certain topics that give good backstory to what fandom was like in his time. I'm sure I have more articles written by him in Animerica issues, but those are in storage at the moment, and I only got time to go through these Newtype issues for right now. So if you want to see what he wrote for Newtype USA, have at it! That's what this blog is for!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Patten is someone I would have loved to have met someday, but I figured for a few years his time was limited. If Bud Light ever had to do a <i>Real Men of Genius</i> ad in honor of Fred Patten, it would talk about how <a href="http://realotakuheroes.com/songs/roh_unwashed.mp3">the community will salute you on your accomplishments on making sure the protection of Carl Macek was achieved by smiting off subtitling fanboys down an convention ally who are armed to the teeth with foam LARP weapons and 4 day con funk emitting from their bodies (GO AND TAKE A BATH!)</a> But aside from making that into an actual bad ass commercial in my mind, there isn't enough praise to go to a man like Fred. </div>

<div style="text-align: left;">
Happy Halloween! It's been a few months since the Cowboy Bebop post, so forgive me on the delay. This was a post I've been thinking about doing for a long while, and it was time I just got whatever I owned of Giant Gorg and put it together. This is lacking the DVD collection from Discotek Media, and the reason for that is I don't own that yet, but maybe I will one day. It's been years since I saw the translated fansubs of the show thanks to <a href="https://skarohuntingsociety.wordpress.com/">Skaro Hunting Society</a>, but they dropped that when the official release came out, so they maybe floating online (I still got mine on my HD).</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So let me introduce you readers on what is in this .rar file. These consist of scans from a small art book that was included in the last laserdisc of the Giant Gorg series, an issue of Dual Magazine that features Giant Gorg material (No.8 Spring 1984), an Animage booklet that contains images and a large amount of info that i'm assuming was in an issue of Animage as a bonus, and a 45 single of two of the songs in the show, along with scans of the booklet that came with the 45. Talk about a bundle!</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
To give a quick lowdown on my fascination with Giant Gorg went back to about when Skaro was starting to fansub the series, and its a show that the likes of<a href="http://letsanime.blogspot.com/2008/06/giant-gorg.html"> Dave Merrill </a>and other online anime reviewers would talk about often that seemed to peak a little interest in the show. After a couple of episodes of seeing it online, I wanted to get my hands on whatever I could find that was Giant Gorg related. I got the laserdisc off ebay back in the fall of 2013 to start out with. After a while, I came across the poster you see above one year at Animazement from <a href="https://asylum-anime.com/store/">Anime Asylum</a> booth. After some time passing, Tim Eldred <a href="http://www.ourstarblazers.com/">Our Star Blazers</a> fansite had a marketplace he briefly set up for a time, and he was selling the Dual Magazine, so I got that sucker off of him. Only recently, I came across the Animage booklet and the 45 single from <a href="https://www.facebook.com/OtakuJoes/">Otaku Joes</a>. The major grand piece i'd love to own but "can never afford nor find room for" would be that big Giant Gorg Soul of Chogokin figure that is roughly over $500 bucks online these days, which ive seen briefly one year at an Animazement con. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I don't see my Giang Gorg collection to just stay the way it is, as long as there's some cool Gorg to be found at cons. Getting the official DVD set is on the list that I just need to bite the bullet and get, but that'll come in due time (as long as Discotek has the license). So if your a Gorg fan or wanna know more about what's out there of Gorg, then have at it with what I have on the download link. So see you next time!</div>

<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2rVnRwW0h8">Happy 20th Birthday Cowboy Bebop!</a> It's been 20 years since Bebop first aired on TV Tokyo, and has made a huge impact on anime fandom ever since then. This post makes up for the way belated 7th anniversary post I never did in February, which my bad on that. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This time we got a real showcase of several books by Tokyopop, which were like little B-Clubs in a way in throughout 2002. I remember picking these things up from Borders bookstores (you know, when those used to exist) throughout the year. My brother had half of these collected and I had the other. Eventually going through my family storage in cleaning their garage over the past couple of years, my brother was cool enough to give me his books not too long ago, so i've kept them in a box till just now for them to be scanned for people to see. As of this post, the later volumes go for $50 on up on ebay for those who really want to own these in their collection. As far as i'm aware, these only got a first printing and were never on shelves after that.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
These contain brief synopsis of each episode with screen caps to help someone narrate the reader into knowing what happens without really watching the show if they are unable too (which thanks to current technology, anybody can watch Bebop on their phones through streaming sites). They remind me of the early ANIMAG issues with episode synopsis of Zeta Gundam and Dirty Pair since the editors working on that didn't think those shows would ever be released in the west. These Bebop books are interesting since the show was airing on Adult Swim in its second run by 2002, and the show was being put out on DVD around this time if not already fully put out. So this was for true Bebop fans who wanted to see concept art, what type of songs played in the episodes, and neat small wallpapers in the books if someone wanted to cut out and hang the cast on their walls somewhere next to their big boobed anime girl wallscrolls. I'm not using the term "waifu" because no one used that term in the early 2000's, you got today's current fandom to thank for that term.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So hope you guys enjoy the .pdf's provided for everyone to check these out, and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J4lNGz-2TaQ">See You Space Cowboy!</a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So it's the start of the Christmas season of 2017, and what better way to make a post about Gundam model kits that were sold in the early 2000's to us Gundam hungry anime nerds at the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To give a brief lowdown on what and how Gundam was like and marketed in America roughly two decades ago, <a href="https://www.theodysseyonline.com/mobile-suit-gundam-in-the-west-part-1">it was a slow trinkling affect that took a couple of years to gain momentum</a>. Before Gundam Wing got Gundam noticed and marketed in early 2000 at major retail chains, it's only existence before was <a href="http://www.zimmerit.moe/kazuhisa-kondo/">Kazuhisa Kondo</a> Mobile Suit Gundam manga published by VIZ in 1999, and before that any publication of Gundam was mentioned in either ANIMAG or Animerica off and on. The first step to officially publishing Gundam came in 1990 from translator Fredrick Schoot. Schoot translated the original Gundam novel that Tomino wrote after the television series, which to him was going to be the ultimate Gundam story that never got made. Through all of these hard efforts, Gundam finally got some recognition from the popularity of Gundam Wing, and what lead to that would be a large amount of Gundam models to be sold at major retailers.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Bandai best idea to help promote these model kits would be to make it competitive where the more kits you buy and build, the greater chance to get recognized by becoming the ultimate Gundam Master or something. In this case, you earn ranks by going to the <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20010722080412/http://gundamofficial.com:80/">Gundam Official Website</a> in order to register yourself and get your desired rank based on the model kits you've built. For its time, it was probably the best thing that Bandai could come up with in order to make Gunpla appealing in America. From what I can gather, you just submit your work towards your skill level for Bandai to send you a pin to reward your accomplishments in Gunpla building. These of course were promoted by the most <strike>lamest </strike>BADASS COMMERCIALS to get kids to buy these model kits, because you <i>wanted</i> to be cool in getting one!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<iframe width="320" height="266" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/6hJ60JkPXsA/0.jpg" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6hJ60JkPXsA?feature=player_embedded" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What I have to show today is some of these little promos in model kits they put out. I've kept most of my booklets from my older kits as far as I know, but I think a lot of kids just threw them away and thought nothing of them. This one in particular comes from my Gelgoog Marine High Grade I got from Target (chances are it came from there) that 15 or so years later, I still have in my model kit box. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aeLHT6IgQyA/WiLYy9rciXI/AAAAAAAANcM/n52biC5V4KsA889-h14LhiBjcrKsJGQsQCEwYBhgL/s1600/img945.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1199" height="640" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-aeLHT6IgQyA/WiLYy9rciXI/AAAAAAAANcM/n52biC5V4KsA889-h14LhiBjcrKsJGQsQCEwYBhgL/s640/img945.jpg" width="478" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's funny how two (<a href="https://www.theodysseyonline.com/my-childhood-filed-chapter-11-toys-us-bankruptcy">and soon to be three</a>) of these retailers are out of business since this promotion event came out. My how the times have changed.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I have a few of these toys and model kits scattered around in boxes in my storage closet, which based on how much the figures go for new its best to hold onto them while you can. I also don't remember the Wing Zero Custom wings looking kinda reddish when I watched Endless Watlz so many years ago, but I guess when I do a rewatch of it, it should come back to me. Yes, you had the MS War card set, which I've got a few sets of those in a box with no one to play them with. My biggest regret is not getting that Zeon battleship set, which I saw that sucker complete at AWA 2017 for a whopping $100+!! Makes me wish I could've got all these figures from the discount bin of the already fading KB Toys at the time. Well, you live and learn I guess.</div>

Although this is a small post it's at least something. To sum up life events since my last post, I'm going to be done with college in a couple of weeks in getting my BS in Communication, I ended my engagement to my fiancee for reasons, and I've become more involved in a local Gundam club in South Carolina (which helped in the break up). I plan on doing a magazine scan by the new year while on Christmas break and figuring out job opportunities. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4NKwiXGiUQ">So have a Merry Christmas to all the viewers of this site!!</a><br />

It's been like what, March since I uploaded something on this site? Yea that sounds about right. Things have been going on and I had a little time to upload another issue from my collection, something i've had for a number of years now.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This issue of Animerica includes information about Yamato/Star Blazers from<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VS8Ryzyxz38"> Rob Fenelon</a>, who is still around and is still a huge Yamato fan to date last I heard. This is another issue signed by Trish at some year at Animazement in the past couple of years, so I can't really remember when. This includes an interview with Noboru Ishiguro and talking about Yamato in great length (including info on Yamato that didn't make it to television, like naked Nova). Also included are some reviews of Gundam Wing when it was first airing on television in Japan, an official ballot to enter what you think the best anime is for 1995 for the Tezuka Awards, some fan art, the winner of the Fatal Fury <a href="https://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2013/02/evidence-14-you-can-still-rock-in.html">"Make my Video"</a> contest story, cool ads and much more. I'll try and get another issue out before the end of the year, as long as school and work don't get in the way too much. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjLRHPCaw4k">So that's all for now so enjoy,</a><span id="goog_388105189"></span><a href="https://www.blogger.com/"></a><span id="goog_388105190"></span> im off to enjoy the rest of the Toonami block on Saturday nights, later.</div>

So I'm a little late to celebrate the 6th year this sites been active, and also a little late to celebrate Bubblegum Crisis 30th Anniversary back in February. Well needless to say, stuff has been going on this semester at school and I've been busy, but at least its better to be late than never. So this little treat is another one of my many Bubblegum Crisis artbooks that I've been able to collect over the years. This was something that I purchased on ebay in 2010 for a fistful of dollars, and I gotta say it ain't bad at all. This is a book that took what studio ARTMIC worked on for the first OVA and made something nice for the fans. There is also interviews in the back and a few images of what studio ARTMIC looked like, even a glass case full of G1 Transformer toys! It's neat stuff like that is what adds to owning artbooks like this to know more about the studio behind your favorite anime. So give it a read and enjoy! </div>

I was recently at a con held in a little town in South Carolina, and one dealer in particular that sold comics had my interest while I was there. I came across this artifact that I know for sure came from a previous owners collection that I used to buy from before he passed away a few years back. So now that it's in my collection, what better way to use it than to scan it and show it off to the world.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfejQBM3Cqo/WGnVR_qCCpI/AAAAAAAANS8/wjami1ZXQYMb-lTMIh_MRK6POHjHq31QgCLcB/s1600/img784.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kfejQBM3Cqo/WGnVR_qCCpI/AAAAAAAANS8/wjami1ZXQYMb-lTMIh_MRK6POHjHq31QgCLcB/s320/img784.jpg" width="232" /></a></div>
There's no need for this to be a .pdf this time, since its only a few photos. It seems that every mini card has an issue of Animage going back as early as the 80's, so this is something that I can assume was added into an issue for its 26th anniversary release. There is even a section made to punch out to hold all of these little cards in. The thing is, I wont do that, since this is too darn unique to disassemble. So it will remain in my collection for a while, or if someone out there really wants it I might be willing to part with it. But I figured this little mini-post is a good way to reign in the new year of 2017, until a post comes out for the 6th anniversary in a couple of months (if I remember to do something by then at least). So take care everyone and enjoy what 2017 has to offer.<br />

I do have something special to show up on Thanksgiving, and that is some Chirashi posters from a contributor. Doug Orlowski from <a href="https://www.oldschoolotaku.com/forum/index.php">OldSchoolOtaku.com</a> forums was cool enough to scan some of these posters to use on this blog, which I have had on my hard drive for a few months now. <a href="https://www.oldschoolotaku.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1032&p=13216#p13216">He even did a post about them on the OSO forums for you guys to check out</a>. So I figured I will finally make good use of them on the blog and scan them up for you guys to see. Doug has been telling me hes got more stuff to contribute to the site, which means you might see more from him in the future than me, but we'll see about that. In the meantime, enjoy what I have to offer, and give thanks to those around you.<br />

When it comes to anime magazine collecting, Animage seems to be the top tier in any anime fans collection when it comes to print media. Well, i'm here to present one of the handful of Animage issues I own from the lot of magazines I purchased from Tim Eldred last summer, and I figured with a catchy sub-title like "How to Enjoy T.V-Anime," I figured this might pertain to some anime fans out there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is a pretty cool issue, and set up in the same format like <a href="http://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2016/03/evidence-27-my-anime-magazine-1982-vol12.html">My Anime</a>, with smaller booklet style pages to see fan art, manga, and interviews and articles within them. From what I saw, this has a nice write up on mecha shows from 1982 that you can enjoy with stuff on Yamato, Macross, Space Adventure Cobra, Baxinger, Dougram and many more.There is also some cool stuff on Crusher Joe, God Mars, and Urusei Yatsura. Also at the end of the issue, there is a Nausicaa manga in the back which came out 2 years before the film did, so that's a treat for any Miyazaki fan to see. So, get the file for yourself and enjoy.</div>

In terms of a life update, i'm on summer break from school and looking forward to my final year at university (funny right, seems that as long as this blog has been going on, i've been in school the entire time). I should also mention that<a href="http://www.imdb.com/name/nm8229746/"> yours truly has an official IMDB credit</a>, since I have been working on the Otaku no Video Kickstarter Blu-ray release starting from last summer, and I have kept my lips (mostly) sealed on that to be a surprise. I am credited for video editing, since I made a few music videos that can be seen when you try and enter in your SMOO code on the heart icon on the blu-ray menu. <a href="https://walkofdarkness.wordpress.com/2016/07/05/otaku-no-video-animeigo-blu-ray-kickstarter-import-premium-otaking-edition/">This post from Walk of Darkness</a> has some of the codes listed to see mine and another video editors work in that menu, so check it out if you happen to have that blu-ray and didn't know what it was for! Things are well for the girlfriend and I, my car still runs, its stupid hot in South Carolina this time of year, and this is where things get even hotter for this election year in America. So I will part by telling you guys that I will alway<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq7T3sJ_OJc">s "give it to you"</a> with more artifacts from the past, so see you next time!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This post is basically here to be as something to fill in some content before my next magazine scan comes out in due time. So for this time, I decided to post up my <b><i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Snatcher_(video_game)">Snatcher</a></i></b> booklet (and game) from the US Sega CD release.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Aside from collecting video game magazines and other anime merch, I also have amassed a collection of video games and console systems, most notably Sega systems and games. The one game in particular I decided to focus on for this post is my own copy of Snatcher on the Sega CD. Even when I first bought this game second hand at a local game store, it was already worth money at the time, which was roughly about $100 bucks. As of now, this game is fetching for over $500 bucks on ebay, and I am not sure if it's gonna go any higher than that or not in the next couple of years. The reason why I decided to do a blog post on this game, is the fact that I want to archive for myself and those that follow this site a very prized possession for me that i'm now ready to part with. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I'll get to my reason for parting with this game in a minute, but I want to add in the brief history of how I got this game, which goes back to the end of February 2008 when I was getting out of one of my programming class at Wake Technical College near Raleigh N.C. I had a buddy of mine Mitch who worked at the local <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Play_N_Trade">Play n' Trade</a> game store, which was a franchise business that were coming about across the country for anyone wanting to "live the dream" in owning their very own gaming store. It was in a conversation while I was headed to my car that he told me the store got a huge trade in on Sega CD games, and he rambled some titles off to me. Within him talking about games I was already interested in, the world seemed to stop for a moment when he muttered from his lips "... Snatcher... ," which prompted me to lose my mind at that moment.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
I had always wanted to own a copy of Snatcher since I got into collecting console gaming after I got out of high school in 2005, and especially starting to collect rare games on a Sega Saturn I bought back in 2006 from a local ma and pa game store near my house. Snatcher was starting to become a game that collectors were starting to go out and hunt around for, which for me I wouldn't know where to begin finding a good copy in the wild, other than flea market gamers that sold everything at ebay prices, before that seemed to be the common trend among independently owned games stores a few years later. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
At that moment, Mitch gave me the phone number to the store, and I hopped in my junker of a Mercury Sable to head over to the Garner N.C. Play n' Trade store. Upon calling the store, I asked what games they had left on Sega CD, and the store clerk (which I believed was one of the owner sons who worked there, the manager Joe, or some other employee) started to tell me the titles. As soon as the word "Snatcher" rang through the earpiece of my phone, I told the clerk to hold that game till I got there, which was about 10 minutes later. I was also told the price of the game, which probably made the luckiest guy in the world with a steal that no one to this day is gonna get, a price of $4.99. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So, long story short, I got there, got my game in amazement, picked up a couple of others (which you will find on the last page of the .pdf file) and rubbed it in their faces on what a steal I got something like this for. Of course both the employee and the owner never bothered to check ebay and price the game off the site before I got there, which I realized that I probably shouldn't have done that in order to not get them any ideas down the road. But hey who cares, people picked up on that later. This was a store that I worked for for about a month a couple of months later, and got fired for some stupid BS reasons. All in all, that was years ago, and once in a blue moon I might stop by and say hi whenever im up in Raleigh.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
So a little over 8 years since I first threw down the cash to get this piece of gaming history, I have decided that I would like to go ahead and cash in on my investment coming up at Animazement. What lead me to my decision is the fact that I don't feel the same way about holding onto the game as I used too. It took me a couple of years after buying Snatcher to sit down and play the game over a weekend through my first play through. As of a few hours ago, it was my second time beating the game, which took me about a week or so playing an hour or so at a time. The time gap between my first play through and my second might have been 5 or so years. I can say that by playing this game a second time, i'm good with my experiences with Snatcher, and I feel that it's time to let someone else have it.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
The thing is, games are meant to be played, and to be played as long as possible till something happens where they cannot be played anymore. I feel that having a game like this on myself just sitting there collecting dust takes away the joy of the game from someone who would be dying to play it and to have it in their own collection. Snatcher isn't the first rare game I have sold from my collection, because I have been gradually selling games from my shelf that don't mean that much to me anymore, and I wan't someone else to to try it out. Snatcher is a great collectors item for any gamer to have, and I feel that i'm not worthy to hold onto it anymore, when someone out there will probably get more joy putting it in their collection. What lead me to this mindset of letting go was an <a href="http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/anncast/2015-08-20/.91910">ANNCast episode </a>back last year, that had guest talking about giving away the things they collect that don't mean much to them the more, as they have aged and grown up as people over the years. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
There are certain things in my collection that I want to hold onto, and others I will eventually get around to letting go. The thing with collecting is that you hold onto an item that has a personal meaning for you at one point, then once you feel that you can let go of it (and make back more money than what you paid for it), that's where someone else can come in and own it for their collection. Collecting games for me was a passion at one point in my life, and it might still be there, but for now i'm ready to part with some of the things in my room. I also feel that if something happened to them, there is a loss that is too much to keep up with in case something happened to them. The more you collect to collect, the more the uniqueness and passion of collecting starts to leave you, and you are stuck with items filling to the brim and no space to put them. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
This post might come off as personal, because it does. Other than using this blog as a way to share my collection of printed anime medium, I can also use it as a means to express how I feel about the things I scan and my history behind them. In this .pdf, there are scans of the booklet with nice character illustrations, a manga that tells the beginning of the game story, and some other unique information about the game. I think by scanning it, its a documented memory of an item i'm letting go, while still keeping the details to what I owned as a record for public access for those who want to see it for themselves. To me, that means more than physically owning it, and I can be content with that. I don't write on this site much, so I figured I can do some good writing now and then to put something up on here. </div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
Also to add, I will put in links for the Youtube videos for people reading this site can watch my game play of the game, and my stupid commentary in it as well. Which hey, if you don't like that, go watch one of the 1000 other Snatcher Let's Play videos out there that may suit your fancy. But with that being said, I think I have written what I wanted to say about the game and what I meant to me before passing it down, in exchange for cash. I will get a anime mag post up in due time, so catcha round!</div>

This time I have a treat for you guys, since we are moving away from American publications and onto actual Japanese publications of anime magazines. I got an handful of Animage and My Anime from <a href="http://www.ourstarblazers.com/">Tim Eldred </a>back in the summer, and I have been planning on posting one of those issues up on the site for sometime, so I figured I would make this occasion special. This issue is chock full of anime that was running in 1982, like Fang of the Sun Dougram, Future Police Urashiman, God Mars, a piece on Super Dimensional Fortress Macross, Space Runaway Ideon, Space Adventure Cobra, something on Crusher Joe, and a ton more from that time. That only makes up half of it, since the later consist of content around Space Battleship Yamato, anime staff interviews, and a whole lot more to boot. This is a true time capsule going back 34 years at this point. If you happen to like what you see and want to translate any of it for tumblr use or whatever, go right ahead. If you do, let me know since I'm curious on what it says too. So enjoy this latest treasure from the past.</div>

Nothing huge in terms of life updates, still with my girlfriend, still in school, still planning on going to the same anime conventions that I do (Anime Weekend Atlanta is on the radar, and I am in the process of working on panel submissions for them), that's about it. There is one thing I would like to mention, but that will have to come when the release of Otaku no Video comes out to the people who backed it, so hopefully I will remind myself to say something about that in the next upcoming post. In the meantime, <a href="https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/madoverlord/riding-bean-high-octane-edition-anime-blu-ray/description">Riding Bean Kickstarter</a> got funded in 2 hours, which I'm planning on having a part in working on that. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX8gg1fQsFI">Sorry for not keeping my promise, maybe there's next year eh?</a></div>

I'd figure I would do a post to bring in the new year of 2016, and to also break that 3 or so month silence I usually do for content downtime. This was something I have been wanting to scan since I started this blog almost 5 years ago, and its high time some of these issues see the light of day. There is also a bit of history I can add for my first ever posting of a<i><b><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monthly_Newtype"> Newtype USA</a></b></i> magazine, so here it goes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Newtype USA was my second time seeing an American anime magazine, but was the first magazine I stayed with for a year and half before eventually losing interest. When I started to get into anime in 2002, Newtype magazine (especially the issues in Japan) always fascinated me to always check it out and to own, but to this day I never have acquired a single issue. But to my surprise, I heard that in America we were going to get our own Newtype magazine, so I was pretty surprised at first. So once a month, I would take part of my lawn care money and put towards getting the next monthly issue of Newtype from my local Borders bookstore in Cary, North Carolina (which today I think stands as a fitness gym of some kind in its place). I never did a subscription to Newtype because to my 16 year old understanding, it was ideal for me to get an issue every month with the money I had on hand than to pay for a year subscription I couldn't afford at the time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Newtype USA opened my world up in giving me variety on whats out there that would interest me. The issues would do small write ups on episode synopsis of shows airing in Japan, DVD's and video games coming out, model kit and toy reviews, nice size glossy printed posters and postcards and some good write ups on studios of interest that month. It also helped that at the beginning and towards the end of Newtype USA run, sample DVD's were included in the plastic seal of each issue so that I can sample anime shows that were coming out. I still have all those DVD's in a CD spindle on one of my shelves from the early issues that I bought. Eventually, Newtype stopped doing DVD's due to people stealing them from the shrink wrap at bookstores, which ment people like me who did the honest thing of buying the magazine to get the DVD were screwed over in the end. The thought of stealing occurred to me once, but I was a pretty honest kid, and I liked getting the magazine to read at school and at home. With the DVD's not being added in the magazine for a few issues, my interested in reading Newtype slowly dwindled to the point that I stopped buying them after my junior year of high school. It seemed that I only used the issues to read a few things in there that caught my interest, while everything else was just advertising and positive write ups on harem anime shows that I had zero interest in.</div>
<br />
This eventually came a problem for me, as I noticed that Newtype USA was just one giant catalog of the same kind of show write ups in every issue. Newtype USA was the example of having hard promotions for shows coming out in Japan as was a way of ADV saying "Oh yea, were gonna get this property one day, just you wait!!" N/USA (im just gonna abbreviate from this point on) is looked on now as the replacement to Viz Animerica magazine, and wasn't ashamed to show how it blatantly advertised itself to appeal to the popular anime trend at the time, which was harem shows. I believe David F Smith, a former freelance writer, <a href="http://alphacounter.com/2014/09/18/alpha-counter-podcast-101-so-gamergate/">explained on an episode of Alpha Counter</a> how he would have to write a positive review of a movie or show that was "complete trash" in order to positively promote a product in order for it to sell. That was one thing that I remembered about N/USA was the fact that you won't see any negativity on a show that they would promote, which to be honest was again, mostly harem shows.<br />
<br />
However, in the mist of big boobed bad anime comedy show reviews and bigger boobed terrible anime comedy shows ads, N/USA had some areas of interest that I still remember to this day when it came to some really good articles. In this issue, we have a write up about studio Sunrise, which is mostly a collective article about how and why Yoshiyuki Tomino got his start (and hate) at Sunrise, a brief monthly write up from anime historian <a href="http://cartoonresearch.com/index.php/category/funny-animals-and-more/">Fred Patton</a> who writes up his thoughts on live action anime adaptations because a rumored Tetsujin 28 movie that <i>maybe</i> was gonna be made, a small write up about Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence, and the real reason why I picked this article to scan: a write up of Robotech history. That particular write up has been on my mind for years now, so now I get to show it to the internet masses.<br />
<br />
This issue in particular was out of my collection for a time and in my brothers hands, which is why its banged up the way it is (don't worry, my other issues are in fine condition for being in a box for a decade at this point). I plan on doing more scans of the issues I own, which were from the beginning runs of N/USA in 2003. I will say that a hand full of issues contain information about Evangelion (because that series was ADV cash cow for a number of years), including the "supposed" live action film they never made, but there's some pretty concept art to go with it.<br />
<br />
This issue was taken from my camera, because I don't have a wide enough scanner to capture the magazine entirely. Hopefully I can get a hold of a scanner the next time I scan the next issue, but we'll see about that. Above is the download link to the file, so it's open for everyone. Hope you enjoy and see you next time, which should be on the 5th anniversary next month, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzAO9A9GjgI">but well see about that!!</a>Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808511318047899265.post-30085669149732595392015-12-04T20:54:00.003-05:002015-12-04T20:56:49.464-05:00It's official, we're on Tumblr now!!!The idea of putting this blog on Tumblr has been on my mind for... a really long time. So, I'd figured it was high time it gets done. The way I figure, it couldn't hurt to get more traffic to the site and get some fresh faces to check out whats here. The only problem about that is, if you can guess, is how often and consistent I will update the site in which those updates go to Tumblr. I guess I am so lazy enough that if I do not find the time to find a blogspot/tumblr plug in, then I will forget to post up stuff on the Tumblr site. Knowing me, it will be a reality. But hey, lets just see how this goes, couldn't hurt.<br />
<br />
Here is the Tumblr page for this blog, and I will make a side link on the page so people can get to it also: <a href="http://animeofyesteryearblog.tumblr.com/">Anime of Yesteryear Blog: http://animeofyesteryearblog.tumblr.com/</a><br />

In terms of posting, I might do something for Christmas. I did get some recent goodies, so well see if any of that makes the list. Plus, I have my old stuff when I was in high school to scan, so that might make the cut next time, but we shall see. Take care everyone, and Marry Christmas!!!Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808511318047899265.post-76551892882090492452015-11-02T10:30:00.000-05:002015-11-03T20:25:21.802-05:00Evidence #25: (You can still) Rock in Animerica Segment (Vol. 4, No. 2, 1996?)<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCpAaHyoNto">It's been almost a year since the last Animerica, but better late than never...</a><br />

I've been meaning to get this out for months at this point, but better now than later. I say that because November 18th will mark the 20th anniversary of Mamoru Oshii <i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghost_in_the_Shell_(film)">Ghost in the Shell</a></i>. And what a better way to celebrate an occasion on this site by having a scan of the Animerica issue it's based upon.<br />
<br />
I first saw <i>Ghost in the Shell</i> in high school when I was able to rent anime from Blockbuster, and I wasn't too sure about the film other than looking at it as another "right of passage" to becoming an anime fan at that time. I have seen the movie a couple of times here and there in the past 13 or so years since my first showing, but it wasn't until last semester when I saw the film again for my Contemporary Art class, where I discussed essential films by Mamoru Oshii. Thanks to the help of the film and Brian Run book <i><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Stray-Dog-Anime-Films-Mamoru/dp/1403963347">Stray Dog of Anime</a></i>, really helped me understand the film in a much different light than I had before. There is also an article on studio Gainax, Street Fighter II, and much more.<br />
<br />
This is also a good time to point out that I am putting out this issue as a .pdf file instead of filling up my blog post with tons and tons of pages. I have been wanting to do that for a long time now, and with it being almost 5 years too late, better start now than later. This was also an issue that was autographed by Trish Ledoux at some past Animazement, and I am not even sure where I found this issue to begin with. It might have been at a local con for all I know years ago. Also, the corner of the book has some wear on it, and you can thank my cat Bubbles for wanting to chew on it because she is a dumb cat. The interview with Oshii by Carl Horn at the time this issue came out is really interesting to read, which I have lifted quotes from Oshii in the interview for my school project, which was most helpful.<br />
<br />
The next release might either be during Christmas, or on our 5th anniversary, who knows at this point. But I will go ahead <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipXN8kzyF5o">and let you guys enjoy your post-Halloween blues.</a>Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808511318047899265.post-24050656636551553602015-06-12T00:00:00.000-04:002015-06-12T13:07:19.826-04:00Evidence #24: A-ni-me: The Berkeley Journal of Japanese Animation (Vol.1, Issue.1, 1990)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Well, now that Animazement has come and gone, I do have a gem that I got from the convention, what was from over a year ago that I haven't gotten around to scanning until just now. I also mention this story and the book in <a href="http://aoypodcast.com/2014/08/18/aoy-podcast-49-springcon-report-pt-2-animazement-2014/">my con report from last year,</a> so give that episode a listen if you care too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So here is my story on that: I remember walking around the dealers room floor before they closed that Sunday of Animazement 2014, and I came across a dealer who usually sells model kits and unique die-cast Japanese toys that are at the usual prices in Japan. This same dealer also happens to sell hobby magazines and the like, which these kinda cons is where I get one issue a year from <i>Hobby Link Japan</i>. I remember looking at the bottom of the magazine shelf and seeing this book, which is something I had never laid eyes upon and started flipping through it. It was then that I realized it had translated transcripts and synopsis from anime series like <i>Ranma 1/2</i> and <i>Nadia</i>, to OVA's like <i>Bubblegum Crisis, Dragon's Heaven, MegaZone 23, Gunbuster</i> and <i>Outlanders.</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I went over to the dealer and asked him about this book, which he told me that this was something he had and sold long ago, but had it been sold back to him sometime after. When I got home from my usual long drive back from the con to my home South Carolina, I was able to look at the book further. What I found most interesting on the back was advertisements for <i>AnimeCon '91</i>, including a print out of guests that would be coming, and an application to attend. So I decided to do what I normally do in this situation when I get something this cool, and that's to put it on the shelf to not be seen or hardly remembered for a certain period of time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It wasn't until I talked to Trish Ledoux over on her Twitch.tv channel one night months later that I mentioned this book to her, which I also found that her husband Toshifumi Yoshida was credited as a "special thanks" in the book. So to my curiosity, I wondered how much involvement he had with this book? I was able to get my answer at this years Animazement when I showed him and Trish this book, which they both seemed to be pleased with this relic of the past. Toshi was cool enough to sign it for me and Trish seemed interested in wanting this to archived on the blog.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So now that the tl;dr story is outta the way, I can let you guys see this for yourselves. I went ahead and scanned everything into a .pdf file so anyone who is interested can see this for themselves. I'm not sure when my next post will be after this one, which is really to say in the coming months. Hope you guys enjoy this anime relic, and see you next time!</div>

With a week away from Animazement 2015 to again make its mark on Raleigh NC (and my roughly 6 hour drive to get there), I occurred to me that on a random youtube search for "trish ledoux animazement," I came across a video someone did of one of her and Toshifumi Yoshida Saturday panel from last year's Animazement that my magazines were featured in this video.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="YOUTUBE-iframe-video" data-thumbnail-src="https://i.ytimg.com/vi/oIpuF0JSjds/0.jpg" frameborder="0" height="266" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/oIpuF0JSjds?feature=player_embedded" width="320"></iframe></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
To sum up the story, I usually bring a handful of Animag or Animerica stuff for Toshi and Trish to autograph every year if there at the convention, and last year I was willing enough to have them use some of the issues I had as a prop for one of their panels. I'm just happy that it was featured in someones video that was literally a few feet from me on the first row with out me ever knowing about it till today. Even though this isn't a full panel video, it does briefly explain Toshi and Trish back story on how they got into the anime industry.<a href="http://aoypodcast.com/2014/08/18/aoy-podcast-49-springcon-report-pt-2-animazement-2014/">If you want more on my convention report from last year, here is my podcast episode about it.</a> See you guys in a while, because I'll have plenty to scan...<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, this site has existed for 4 years and... 8 days. Yea, so I'm a little late to the party, I apologize for that. So, what could I be putting up for this late special occasion for this year? Well, I realized its been almost 2 years<a href="http://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2013/06/evidence-15-animag-saga-issue-8.html"> since I posted anything related to ANIMAG</a>, and it's high time she had another debut once more. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
If you can't tell based on the image of the cover, or the red text next on the bottom right, this is an issue focused on famed character designer Haruhiiko Mikimoto. I had a chance to shake the hand of Mikimoto at Animazement 2013, and even had him sign a copy of <i>Macross: Clash of the Bionoids</i> (aka, the only "legit" copy of Macross DYRL we ever got in the states).<a href="http://aoypodcast.com/2013/06/07/aoy-podcast-17-the-hangover-cast-2013-animazement-phoenix-comic-con-talkback/"> I told this story of my experience meeting Mikimoto in the podcast I did about that Animazement 2 years </a>ago, so give that a listen when you can. In short, he didn't have a clue that a version existed in the states, and happily signed it for me, BREAKING the DREADED "One Autograph Per Person" rule Animazement seems to tack onto con-goers when a line is past a certain point for them. So, let's see what's inside this issue:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I want to say this was autographed at either Animazement 2013 or 2014 (might be the former), and here we have Trish synopsis of a rundown of what happened at the first A-Kon for her. If you wanna know who this "...unairconditioned Ford Mustang" owner really is, then you are in luck.<a href="http://www.awopodcast.com/2014/10/anime-world-order-show-131-robert-w-gibson-all-about-the-man-part-2.html"> Robert Gibson was on an episode of the Anime World Order podcast not to long ago</a>, and also did a<a href="http://hokutonofogie.blogspot.com/"> blogspot about his past</a> in anime fandom and what he did to contribute to it, which all of it is really interesting to read and hear. It's also interesting to point out that even at the earliest times of anime information on print, you still had rumors of "anti-ANIMAG" people. I guess in anime journalism, you still have your die-hard critics.</div>

Here we have some info about anime at the time, ranging from City Hunter to Yotoden (aka Wrath of the Ninja in the states). What's interesting is the fact that there is a written piece on OVA's coming out that include some obscure ones that you might find online like the<a href="http://bakabt.me/164886-goddamn-domo.html"> racing OVA Goddamn!</a>, Riki-Oh and Iczer-3. The others besides Gall Force and Wild 7, I'm not too familiar with on these titles. There is also the releases of Viz Media "manga-to-comics" style printing that is being released during this time. </div>

Here we got the highlight of this issue, and thats a good write up on works by Mikimoto at this time. It's interesting that they have a timeline period on how Macross and Robotech came to be, and even all the history behind Robotech earliest failures that<a href="http://www.toplessrobot.com/2015/02/robotech_macross_harmony_gold_anime.php"> Harmony Gold just seems to still be tripping over 30 some years later.</a> I highly doubt the people working on this magazine 25 years ago would've predicted that Robotech would still be some huge thing in anime and that HG would find ways to keep screwing that up. If someone there did make that prediction in the middle of a poker game one night, they would be happy to know it's still true today.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's also interesting they bring up the differences of the english dubs in the Macross part regarding the <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQWTdEBb69s&list=PL22A521F23E14B236&index=1">international dub of Megazone 23 Part 2</a> and <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjlFOvgIupM">Macross DYRL</a>. The ending they mention about animation company Idol doing the<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qbJFbRKNKM"> bonus material to the Robotech: The Movie is up on youtube to see</a>. And from what I have heard, it's some kinda of bonus on the laserdisc for the international dub for Megazone 23 Part 2. If I am hearing things wrong, then let me know in the comments.</div>

So I think that's gonna wrap it up for this segment of <i>The Anime of Yesteryear.</i> This is usually the part where I state what iv'e been doing since the last post, and its pretty much the same: school, the podcast, love life, social life, etc. I'll usually try and score some more Animag/Animerica issues when I go to Raleigh for this years Animazement, even though the backlog of material I have will last for a good while. So, thanks for sticking around, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7K80iymgWRg">and letting you know that this site and our love for you isn't a lie...</a></div>

Well it is time for the holiday season once more, and I won't end the year off without posting something up for you readers who still keep up with this site. This was an issue that I've been wanting to post for a while now, especially since I got all of <i><b>Space Adventure Cobra</b></i> earlier this year from Nozomi Entertainment on DVD (<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j0EtFwBA8sE&list=PLx7U8ckdzAikuUQNkEn_psxofpsJNGUtZ">which you can watch the show on their youtube channel for free if you care</a>). <i>Space Adventure Cobra</i> is a show that after every episode, I kept saying to myself "This is the GREATEST ANIME EVER MADE!!!" I kid you not, I ended every episode saying just that sentence to myself over and over again. If you think I might be crazy, then see the show for yourself.<br />
<br />
As for this particular issue, I believe I've had this issue for a couple of years by this point, and did buy it from the usual comic book shop in Raleigh NC as I do every year. This is another issue that was kindly autographed by Trish Ledoux and her husband Toshifumi Yoshida at either Animazement 2013 or 2014, since they were both present both years. So lets get things started by posting up a bunch of images of articles, interviews, reviews, fan art and advertisements that make up what Animerica truly is:<br />

<br />
This time "From the Editor," Trish Ledoux writes about how it was to work with <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bFZj6Fnq4G4">female booty aficionado</a> Buichi Terasawa when she was employed for the marketing firm A-Girl. Interesting enough (or probably not), Trish defends Terasawa's art style of pure REAR-sploitation by stating that he can at least draw women a heck of a lot better than most contemporary anime/comic artist out there (here's looking at you Masami Obari / Rob Leifeld). To sum up, Terasawa has class, which speaking of...<br />

... here is such an article with the classy manga author. I am not sure if Terasawa still comes to Comic Con in San Diego, or if he still dresses in black as his manga secret agent persona out in the public. Regardless. this is still a good interview, which Terasawa talks about his beginnings as a manga artist, and even covering his other works. There is even a small write up about how the <b><i>Cobra: The Psychogun</i></b> project was shelved at this time, only to be revived a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Cobra_the_Animation_episodes#The_Psychogun">decade later to an OVA</a>. There is also a write up by a Betsy Sherman, who seems to state that the movie is way to anti-feminist for her taste. Well it wouldn't be for her taste, because Cobra is for real men... and women who who like the idea of having leather outfits with guns attached to them.<br />

Here we have the other articles about anime that is current in Japan as of 1995, as well as reviews and articles about the recently releases that came stateside during this time. You can find a really good article from Carl Horn about his view on the Manga Ent. release of the <b><i>Patlabor 2</i></b> movie, the opinions about <i>Evangelion</i> from the staff (who complain that the robots look too thin, and need to be bigger. Ah, Anime Journalism circa. 1995...), the kind words from everyone's "semi-hated-or-loved-but-is-now-dead" Carl Macek, the letters to the editor and good ol' fanart. Also, I am guessing this is the last part of that Fatal Fury "Make My Video" Challenge <a href="http://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2013/02/evidence-14-you-can-still-rock-in.html">back in our last Animerica post</a>, which just seems to be a fanfic story of sorts. I am sure I have issues before this one that when posted can complete this story, but well see about that.<br />

And lastly, all the advertisements of what was hot then, but now long forgotten about now. Hey, at least you can get Hentai tapes for a couple of bucks off regular MSRP, and get excited for what is coming to the ADV library in 1996 with those hot new titles!!!<br />
<br />
Well, I think that is all we have time for in this last segment of 2014. I cannot guarantee if I will post more or less in 2015, but chances are the next post will be for the 4th anniversary of this blog. What's that going to be... I don't know yet. If you want a life update, I am still enrolled at my university, changed my major to Communication, still going to anime conventions, <a href="http://www.aoypodcast.com/">still run our sister site podcast</a>, and currently in a relationship. 2014 was a pretty good year, and an interesting one at that. I hope for the best for 2015, and hope you guys are there to follow along with what will be coming out next time. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWnCWjVzNsE">So until then, I plan on giving the new year peace and love...</a>Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808511318047899265.post-53323779498909394502014-09-30T10:30:00.000-04:002014-09-30T10:30:00.103-04:00Evidence #21: Space Dandy Official Fan Book (2014)<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ISgRENpdZus">Guys, I am so ready to make this a hell of a fun club... IN SPAAAAAACE!!</a><br />
<br />
I am actually surprised that I want to release something in less than the 4 month time gaps I have been doing for a while now, and I figured this would be a great opportunity to bring today's entry to the internet table. So, as of September 28th 2014, on the 12:30 am timeslot for Toonami on Adult Swim, we say goodbye to a unique and awesomely weird-as-hell-and-fun-as-hell show called <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_Dandy">Space Dandy</a>. I don't believe something like Space Dandy will be around anytime soon, for many many years. This was a show that so many people who have been working in the industry threw in their hats and talent into it to make really, whatever they wanted too (if you wanna lowdown on who worked on who, <a href="http://www.pelleas.net/aniTOP/index.php/space-dandy/">Ben from Anipages</a> has been doing episode by episode synopsis of the series since day one). But, being the fan of the show that I have been by watching it every week in the states, I wont leave you guys high and dry.<br />
<br />
I know in my last post, I mentioned how one of the unique buys I got when I went to Japan was the <a href="http://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2014/07/evidence-20-exhibition-go-nagai-book.html">Go Nagai book</a>. I also failed to mention (for a good cause, because I wanted it to be a surprise), that I went to an anime store a few blocks from that bookstore and they had hardly any Space Dandy merch on the table. But, much to my dismay, they did have the Space Dandy Official Fan Book for sale, and in limited quantities. So I snagged up one for me and my podcast co-host Jonn as a nice little gift, before some ultra otaku that would knock a gaijin like me to the floor using some Hatsume Miku figure as a blunt object in order to get a copy before I could lay a hand on it. Well, lets be honest, that last part would probably never happen.<br /><br />So, I have been waiting to post up this book for the fans of Space Dandy for a while, because I am really not sure how many are out there in the world. I think you guys know how this works, as I have the book all on a .rar file for you to download and view on whatever devices you have at your leisure. This all contains line art, storyboards, interviews with the staff and a whole lot more. So, just hit the <i>Download .rar file here</i> link below and your all set. I think the next post will come out around Christmas... yea, thats a good assumption. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3mgRjttLMLc">Until then, keep being dandy in your space baby!</a><br />

<br />
<br />
So I could give a huge excuse as to why its been over 4 months since I've posted something on this site; which would only include reasons like "...its that college thing i'm at" and "...well i'm working a lot" followed by "...I went to some places and did my thing you know what i'm saying" and so on and so forth. But regardless of whatever I could say, I do have something for you guys that might be of interest. So here's the deal:<br />
<br />
Last month I was able to go to Kanazawa Japan on a University overseas trip to teach Japanese students English for 10 days. If you wanna know more about that trip,<a href="http://aoypodcast.com/2014/06/30/aoy-podcast-45-big-in-japan-special-aka-zeonic-goes-to-japan/"> I did a whole podcast about it at our sister site here</a>. My goal there of course was to get as much as I could when I could, which I did come back with some unique items. One in particular I found at a used bookstore near the Samurai district right next too the heart of Kanazawa (I don't know the name off hand so pardon me there), I was looking through the store to find some Anime V mags, if I could get a hold of them. That was when in the manga section, I stumbled upon this little charm that I knew I had to get. So far, as of this dated post, it seems that no one on the internet has bothered to scan this book, and it seems no one on the internet seems to sell it. If you want to physically hold it in your hands, the <a href="http://www.worldcat.org/title/nagai-go-seikimatsuten-exhibition-go-nagai/oclc/42876463">Library of Congress seems to have a copy</a> last I checked. But with no Anime V mags in my hands, I'd figure I can show this baby off on the internet to whoever it may interest too, which should be a lot of people.<br />
<br />
So what I am going to do is have a download link for the .rar file so you people can download it and see it for yourselves. I apologize for some of the quality of the scans because I only have one scanner on hand that I can use, and its a much thicker book than how I scan magazines. Also a <b><i>NSFW warning</i></b> is added to this because of nudity and some violent content, because I don't want kids to see it and let alone your bosses, unless there cool with Devil Lady boobs on the company computers. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tX5ZRE26YWM">So guys until next time, have a happy late 4th of July...</a><br />
<br />

<br />
Wow, 3 years already... Has it been that long since my first post? Which speaking of posts, I never did an Evidence #5 (<a href="http://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2011/08/evidence-6-you-can-still-rock-in.html">well technically this should have counted</a>), which is why you got two numbers being shown than just one in the title. I'm just gonna count it was one big thing and move on, because... who cares.<br />
<br />
So to celebrate this blogs 3rd birthday (or 3rd times the charm maybe), I decided to bring back another issue from V.Max, which the last one was posted in <a href="http://animeofyesteryear.blogspot.com/2012/10/evidence-12-vmax-vol1-issue-5-1992.html">Oct of 2012</a>. I'd figure its time I brought back another issue from the magazine done under R. Talsorian Games (<a href="http://forum.animepast.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=501">which there is a page I will post showing a formal written reason to why that is</a>.) As far as dates go, I believe this was in 1993, but there are other dates being thrown around on anime releases like a LOGH movie and a few other titles. I based the date off a release for a Nov '93 Urotsukidoji VHS tape that was in an ad from CPM (although granted CPM name isn't listed anywhere on the ad, its from New York and it reeks John O'Donnell VHS tape design ideas. YOU CAN'T FOOL ME J.O.D!) Let's get this birthday bash started shall we:<br />

The second image is the written notice about the change I was telling you about earlier. Of course, you would need eyes to self display drop shadows on the text because its REEEEEEEALLY hard to read with the text mixing into the background like that. I hope this magazine did well enough that people didn't send letters on why there are ad's for RPG books in the issues after this one.<br />
<br />
We also have a nice write up on the pretty popular early 2000's Toonami show Yu Yu Hakusho. I rather enjoyed the show on Adult Swim before it switched to Toonami on afternoon TV, because I miss cursing in my anime and uncensored blood. Even though that was taken out during during the Toonami block, it is still a really cool show to watch, even though I had the ending spoiled to me when a dude at my technical college a year ago told me how it ended for him. Interesting that these magazines from the past cover shows that do wind up on TV over a decade later, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6_reszOu0Z4">plus we did get some sweet english intros out of it also.</a><br />

Next up we got a write up on what was cool at Comiket that year in Japan, and an episode synopsis about a few episodes of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRtYuG6MgX8">Legend of Galactic Heroes</a>. The good thing about these old magazines is the fact that they reported on shows that more than likely would never come to America at that time, even though they really hoped for it. There is an interview piece with a translator at the bottom grey areas by the name of Takayuki Karahashi, who even was asked if the show was coming to America, which his response was "lets see how well it goes over at cons." Funny how times have changed, because LOGH will have a slim chance to seeing stateside release, where as moe-bullcrap-fetish show #1 and loli-moe-bullcrap-fetish show #2 will get instant praise by people on 4chan and Anime News Network. I have to hate the internet sometimes, or at least the parts that are detestable for me.<br />

Here we got video game reviews, music cds of Gall Force, Yu Yu Hakusho and Tekkaman Blade; with domestic anime releases and building resin kits. I will say, the first Gaiarth OVA is pretty entertaining to watch, and really not all that bad from the first OVA stand point since well, i've only see the first one so far. Yea, those Hokuto No Ken games that I have played from about this time period are kinda bad, and at least with the HnK: Ken's Rage games, those are pretty fun for people who like Dynasty Warriors games (I heard the second Kens Rage game is downright terrible... which that sucks for me, because I do not wanna pay 60 bucks for it digitally on the PSN network.)<br />

And that about wraps up this post for a while. I am not sure when I will get around to posting next time, but you know I always got something to show. (hopefully not a long 4 month gap like I did you guys last year, sorry about that.) I will say I have a chance to go to Japan at the end of May for a study abroad trip to teach Japanese kids better "engrish." If anything, I'll post photos of my trip after that and anything I bought from there (like Anime V mags if I am so lucky to do so.) As for personal life stuff (since I say more about it on here than my own Facebook page), school is still a thing, and I should be working on a rough draft essay due tomorrow instead of writing on here, but whatev's. I thank everyone who still keeps up with this site, despite the long time gaps of postings I do (although not as bad as <a href="http://anime82.blogspot.com/2014/02/im-in-mexico.html">Regan does on Anime82 at times</a>.) I will sign off our 3rd anniversary by saying... <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SElmcGftHrk">man, my homework really never ends does it</a>.Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2808511318047899265.post-50718000678853286082014-01-01T11:00:00.000-05:002014-01-01T21:58:58.166-05:00Evidence #18: TurboForce Vol. 3 (Jan 1993)Happy New Year guys!!<br />

<br />
Now that were in the New Year, and who knows when i'll post again, I might as well put in my blog time to get things started. So, let's kick off things with a magazine that just turned 21 today, as we get to party with the<a href="http://archives.tg-16.com/turbo_force_0001.htm"> TurboForce magazine!!</a><br />
<br />
The story on how I got this issue (well, 2 issues to be exact) takes us back to Animazement 2013. With the game rooms set up in the Marriott hotel across the street from the convention center, I decided to browse the rooms and check out what they got while snapping some pictures. Then lo' and behold, there I saw some video game magazines sitting on a table in the retro console room. I decided to just shuffle through to see what they had, and that's when I came across this magazine and decided to cycle through it. Little did I know, this was the issue that had a write up cover of Bubblegum Crisis that I saw on the internet a couple of years prior on the internet, or at least a screen cap/ what someone said about it. Also to my surprise, there were 2 COPIES of this thing. So I picked up the issue, plus some issues of Weekly Famitsu (which I could post on this site one day in the future... maybe) and went up to the guys who were running the game room. I asked if these were on sale or if I could purchase these issues from them, and they told me "Hey there free, pick a few that you like." And with a humble "YOU BET SIR!" attitude, I got the magazines that caught my eye and walked outta there with a great score.<br />
<br />
So with that, I am going to show you what this issue of TurboForce has in store, so lets take a look:<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yOPMKAdh8Ww/Ur5ZFmQlkgI/AAAAAAAABXA/7det9uRa4n0/s1600/scan0002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-yOPMKAdh8Ww/Ur5ZFmQlkgI/AAAAAAAABXA/7det9uRa4n0/s320/scan0002.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Oh boy, the way things were advertised in the 90's and how they priced things. It seems quite clear that when it comes to products being advertised in the 1990's, they used the tactic of "Hey! You There! You're a gamer right? You're not that good at math or money, am I right? That's why you should give us your money to get this system, because you don't know what money is or how to manage currency well. But that's ok cool guy, we get it. And by get it, I mean get this system!" You can find this tactic that companies like <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ln05AYtNPjU">Tiger</a> and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nxuna944dls">Atari</a> were so so guilty of using, and look how they turned out. All in all, people who bought this spent way to much on something NOBODY ELSE HAD!!!!</div>

This was the BGC write-up I was talking about that I heard about on the "net" a couple of years ago. It seems like when I first read this, they wrote it like Nene was the main character of this whole anime series based on what it seems to be that they watched the last OVA and were like "Oh hey, this is all of BGC that we need to put in an anime review. We got this guys!" I actual talked about this issue with the guy who runs BanzaiCon this past year and he mentioned in conversation how he had first heard of Bubblegum Crisis from reading this issue of TurboForce. So, despite that this might be a hack review 21 years later, at least it got people interested in watching this anime. And I hope they wern't disappointed to find that Nene wasn't the main star.</div>

To show the "knowledge" of anime at the time, these writers must have never seen Patlabor before. Because, correct me if i'm wrong on this, the CGI Ingram never, NEVER transforms into a CGI race car in the entire series/OVA/movies/manga/novels. I believe i'm good on this fact. However, could it have been possible? <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9UtUzjUA5Q">Hey, in 10 years, who knows?</a></div>

So, this was an assignment for my Graphic Design class to make a photo journal during the semester to show images to the viewer of whatever message you want to tell. I was in a classroom full of people (majority of them were prissy college girls) who took photos of what it seemed to be the same thing over and over and over again. I decided to be the odd ball and go for the nerd approach to make my photo journal about my hobby of collecting anime magazines, especially ones from this site. The results were as expected, hardly no one really cared, except for 2 or 3 people who were nerds like I was who gave me praise on my work and what I took photos of. I'd rather have that kind of reaction than taking photos of something I do not give two craps about because it would look the same as everyone else's stuff (which was rustic signs, neon signs, and more and more signs).<br />
<br />
But fret not, because like the usual fashion, I have photos of what the final outcome of the book came too be. It's not all the images of the magazine, because I am nice enough to compile all of them into a .zip file for you guys to download at the end of this paragraph. Think of it as a nice (and super cheap) Christmas gift for you to look at on your own time.<br />

And there you go, so I hope you guys enjoy my labor of love (which really wasn't that bad to make). I plan on posting up another magazine piece in the next couple of weeks (or at the start of the new year) so stay tuned for that. I didn't mean for a 3 month absence of nothing being posted on this site, but my semester at school, podcasting and other things in life kinda were in the way. If you look on the side bar of the site i have a direct link for <a href="http://aoypodcast.wordpress.com/">The Anime of Yesteryear Podcast</a> site for you guys to click and listen in. If I don't post anything by Christmas, Ill see you guys in the New Year. <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9f2wyyKGN7Y">So I will leave you guys to watch out for the cops!</a><br />

P.S: I also noticed while working on this project that I never did an Evidence #5 post, I just skipped from 4 to 6. So.... Ill have to do something about that one day, who knows.Dustin Kopplinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12742838551224204638noreply@blogger.com0
